White Homeland: Part 2

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

On this episode of F*** Your Racist History: “White Homeland: Part 2,” we discuss historical efforts by American white supremacists to create white ethno-states within the United States via racial separatist movements like the Northwest Territorial Imperative and Oregon’s racist founding history and their state constitution from 1859, which both forbid slavery while also prohibiting Black people from inhabiting land in the territory. Finally, we explore the broader impacts of systemic racism in our cities and suburbs, the creation of our highway infrastructure to aid in racial separatist efforts, and the often destructive effects of gentrification on American communities.

At the heart of america is a dirty andshameful reality. Every one knows it exists, but the devastating impact thatis left on generations of people has been glost over and even ignore, especially by those who still benefitfrom that to our american history is rooted in races. More obvious chapters include thedecimation of native american populations, slavery, segregation, thejim prote, most americans have learned about- or at least heard of theseevents, but ask them about the agena movement or when home grown extremistsfilled madison square garden for a nazi rag or how henry ford's hatred of jewshelped inspire adolph hitler and you're likely to get a plain stare. It's timeto explore these overlooked events that don't make it into our history book andcorrect a record for the people harmed by them. The trace are passed to moderntragedies and learn how folks over the sentries have fought back. We need toconfront our racist history so that we might have a chance to defeat it onceand full. I'm christian peachey, the formerwhites supremacist, who became an anti racist actinise and a bringer of hardtruth on each episode of ef, your racist history. You learn aboutamerica's conveniently overlooked racist origin stores joining as we yank off the hood andexpose the lives behind some of america, so called triumphs and heroes. Fear one emotion with the power to moveor a mobilize millions who controls the flow of fear controlsthe masses. Some of the most brutal regimes of thepast came to power when people were at their most desperate moments, downtrodden challenged fearing for their prosperity or fighting for meresurvival. One of the most prominent examples ofthis use of fear mongering is that of adolph hitler and the third rice. The german people embraced adolphhitler and his nazi party's message that the jews whom they tried to equatewith communists and subhumans were supposedly to blame for their nationalsuffering. In his rousing speeches, hitlerpresented the conflict between white, germans and ethnic or religiousminorities as a situation of life and death for the country, non germans or more specifically, nonarians or non perera. Germans were a so called existential threat quote. There are only two possibilities:hitler told a munich audience on to nine hunden twenty two, either victory of the arian orannihilation of the arian and the victory of the jew and quote in one form or another fear, and theuse of manufactured fear to control. People is always at the root of a hatemovement, whether it be the fear of losing power, rights or property, afear of foreign cultures, overpowering the status quo or, as is claimed by themodern white supremacist movement, fear of a total extinction of the white race. Capitalizing on that notion, while inprison in the late e s and early s for his role in the assassination of ajewish radio host, one thousand nine hundred and eighty four white su premises, terrorist david lanedrafted in a pamphlet what would become the infamous credo and montre of whitepower extremists world wide? The fourteen words quote: we must secure the existence ofour people and a future for white...

...children and quote. This is sometimes followed by thesecondary unless commonly used white power slogan, because the beauty of thewhite arian woman must not perish from the earth. Exhibit a david lane gave the white powermovement a simple focal point, protect the future of the white racefrom well everything non white, implying that their white existence isfleeting. The thread of extinction or a great replacement is looming. David lane was one of the leaders ofthe white supremacist terrace group. The order formed on sand nine hundredand eighty three, the order served as a paramilitary arm of the arian nationsorganization and aim to form a white homeland in washington, oregon andidaho, via violent insurrection, will talk more about lane and his group. Theorder in a later episode securing the existence of a whitepeople is a broad statement and can be interpreted in many frightening ways.In hitler's case, securing the existence of his arian nation meant theextinction of jewish people and other non arians. If we look at the southernslave holder class of the antebellum united states securing their existence, men attempted secession from the union and the establishment of a sovereignslave owning nation to keep black people in slavery and whites in poweruntil the end of time or, at the very least, to keep whites completelyseparate from those they viewed, as quote lower classes of humans. If theysaw non whites as human beings at all. In the case of more modern americanwhite supremacists, the movement has been and is idling somewhere in betweendreaming of carving out an all white homeland for themselves within the landmass of the united states or taking violent action in executing non whitepeople to hasten the result in their own locals. For example, the racist gunman who wasresponsible for the deaths of twenty two people in the wounding of dozensmore in a walmart store in el paso texas. In two thousand, seventeen was aproponent of separate ethnic states. In his manifesto he wrote about wantingquote a confederacy of territories with at least one territory for each race: dillon roof the american neonazisterrorist. Instead, scorned efforts by white separatist groups like the northwestern front, which aims to create a sovereign white nation within thenorthwestern united states as ineffective rufe stated in his manifesto quote tome the whole idea of a north west white homeland just parallels the concept ofwhite people running to the suburbs. The whole idea is pathetic and justanother way to run from the problem without facing it and quote, he ultimately murdered nine blackparishioners of an african methodist episcopal church in charleston, southcarolina in two thousand and fifteen, in an attempt to further his racistendeavour to secure a white homeland. Each of these horrific acts ofterrorism stemmed from the perpetrators, believing they were, making a so calledpositive contribution towards a broader effort to solve the quote. Unquote:problem of black and brown people encroaching on white autonomy andthreatening white prosperity in america.

The al passo gunmen even mentioned thegreat replacement theory, a term coined in two thousand eleven by whitenationalist, french conspiracy, theorist and writer, renaut camu andchanneled by neonazis at the deadly white nationalist rally incharlottesville virginia in august. Two thousand a d. Seventeen, the basis of the great replacementtheory and the fear mongering behind it. Is this white supremacists believe thatthrough non white emigration and missages or interracial relationshipsthat produce offspring, the white race is being driven to extinction. Kamu wrote about this in the context ofmoslems immigrating into france and replacing the white populace therephysically and culturally. So it's important to note that these views spanthe globe and discriminate equally in the last episode white homeland partone. We dissected racist efforts by the knights of the golden circle, theconfederate slave colonies of brazil and abraham lincoln's colonization, effort of lavash or cow island off the coast of hadi. These movements were attempts to carveout spaces for white dominance by annexing foreign territory. To day we explore similar efforts tocreate white ethno states within the united states. We dig into oregon's racist foundinghistory and its state constitution from eighteen. Fifty nine, which forbidslavery, while also prohibiting black people from inhabiting land in theterritory, will also look at the broader impactsof systemic racism in our cities and suburbs and the creation of our highwayinfrastructures to purposely divide us and aid white supremacist efforts. This is episode. Eight of feu, racisthistory, white homeland, part, two, the american pacific northwest territory, bounded by the pacific oceanto the west and rocky mountains to the east, a land of plenty nature, untouched rawbeauty, tree huggers, granola, hippy, central, that's how most people see it anyway, and while it is all that it's also somuch more in seight hundred a d eighteen oregon country was establishedby international treaty between the united states and the united kingdom. It comprised modern day oregon, idaho, washington and parts of montana wyomingand even british columbia. Canada increased emigration to the new unitedstates territory via the oregon trail prompted a revision of the treaty ineighteen, forty, six establishing the modern border between canada and theunited states. However, by this point in its younghistory, oregon country or the oregon territory, as it would come to be known, had already established itself as a white ethno state, a racial home landand it was codified in their racial exclusion laws following a fight over a horse by afreed black man and a native american man named cockstick, which left thenative american and two white men dead...

...in march eighteen, forty four, a lawbanning black people from the area was enacted. Although an original copy ofthe law does not exist to day pieces of, it have survived from later reprints somewhat. To its credit, it stated thatslavery and involuntary servitude quote shall forever be prohibited in oregon, but showed its true intent when it also said that freed slaves had to leave thestate within three years. The law also stipulated that any onefound to be in breach would be arrested, tried and sentenced to quote no lessthan twenty, nor more than thirty nine stripes to be inflicted by theconstable. You can brush up on the racist historyof constables and slave patrols. An episode to the punishment of whipping was laterreplaced with hard labor, but the law still remained in eighteen, forty, nine, the oregon legislature passed yet another exclusion law quote it shallnot be lawful for any negro or mulatto to enter into or reside within thelimits of this territory, providing that nothing in this act. Shell appliedto any negro or mulatto now resident in this territory, nor shall it apply tothe offspring of any such as our residents and quote. Basically, if you are a person of colorand were already in the oregon territory, you'd be allowed to staywith major restrictions, of course, but they weren't letting any one else inunless they were white. Their reason within the new oregon territoriespreamble, the law stated that it would be quote highly dangerous to allow free, negroes and mulattoes to reside in the territory or to intermix, with indiansand stilling into their minds. Feelings of hostility toward the white race andquote elements of this law were baked intooregon state constitution over a decade later. At the time, the oregonterritory had less than one hundred black residents. In total, threeseparate sections of oregon's constitution sought to limit the rightsof people of color, the bill of rights, restricted all new people of color fromresiding in the territory, and it removed the right of existing black andmultiracial individuals from owning real estate and released any existingemployment contracts. It also forbid them from holding publicoffice. Another section entitled rights ofaliens which remained in the state constitution until nineteen seventystated that only new white residents may enjoy the same rights as so callednative born citizens. Oregonn was admitted as a state to theunion in eighteen, fifty nine with no revisions to its constitution. It wasthe first state constitution that allowed racist, exclusionary text during the american civil war. Organadopted even more laws intended to keep the state as white as possible. Forexample, it adopted anti message: ation laws which banned white people frommarrying any one who is a quarter or more black native american, asian orhawaiian, how exactly they calculated that andwho they assemble to make. Those determinations is lost to history. Inaddition, the state legislature adopted a new law requiring all indigenouspeoples and people of color residing in oregon to pay an additional annual taxof five dollars about a hundred and thirty dollars to day. Why?...

Simply because they weren't white andthey had to pay for the so called privilege of living among or burdeningwhites. If any one was unable to pay, they wereforced to perform hard labour, such as maintaining public roads and railroads following the end of the civil war andthe ratification of the fourteenth amendment, which granted citizenship toall persons born or naturalized in the united states, including formerenslaved people, and guaranteed all citizens equal protection of the laws.Conservatives with the time were democrats took control of the statelegislature after the eighteen sixty eight elections. They immediately rescinded the state'sratification of the amendment and were supported at the time by near universal, please from oregonians to leave the union. This rallying cry for secession wouldecho throughout the state's history into the modern day. The newly elected oregon legislaturealso refused to ratify the fifteenth amendment, which said no state coulddeny a citizen the right to vote on account of race, color or previouscondition of servitude and continued to fight that right until nineteen fiftynine, although only symbolic as it was obliged to comply under federal law, itmade oregon's position on the suffrage of people of color, clear. Neitherblacks nor their voting rites were welcome in the state with the resurgence of the ku klux klanin nineteen teens and nine. Is it's no surprise that k k k membership climb inthe state of oregon, given its racist history, yon nineteen? Twenty three oregon's?Fifty clan chapters were over thirty five thousand members strong. It was the state with the mostsignificant amount of support west of the mississippi river. In comparison, texas k, k, camemembership at the time was only around twenty five hundred and the state withthe most supporters indiana claimed around two hundred and forty thousandmembers in nineteen twenty two, the k k k evensucceeded in putting one of their own in the oregon governor's mansion walterm pierce. A frequent guest at clan rallies piercewould later be elected to congress in one to nine hundred thirty, two afteryears of endorsing the white terrorist group and their slogan, one hundred percent american oregon's neighbour washington stateequally embraced the ku klux clan in their racist views, their membershipnumbers rivalled, oregons and washington state became known for theirk. K k. Super rallies following a convention spelled on brand, with a kayof course, in july of nineteen twenty three that drew over fifty thousandattendees over the next few years. Clanconventions continued to host many thousands of spectators, members and non members alike joined inon the racist pageantry. These gatherings often included fireworks.Twenty one gun salutes patriotic and factually misrepresented reenactmentsof american history cross, burnings and fiery pseudoreligious, racist sermons. These events were designed to enticewhite americans specifically non members who they could mesmerize andfrighten with their rousing whites only propaganda and fear mongering of ablack takeover. Although turn out at these racistrallies was high, general public acceptance of the ku klux clan remainedrelatively lukewarm in the pacific northwest. During this time,...

...clan members often criticized oregonnewspapers for not publishing their anti catholic conspiracy theories. Washington officials concerned aboutoptics band clan masks and robes at political rallies and sometimeswithheld permission for planned conventions almost as quickly as the ku klux planrose in the north western states. Their numbers soon began to diminish. Nevertheless, racist sentiments haveremained in nineteen twenty three: the state oforegon passed laws that prevented japanese people from owning propertyand allowed cities to deny them and other people of color business licenses during world war. Two four thousandoregonians of japanese descent were placed in internment camps and anythingof value was stripped from them, we'll discuss asian and termen camps indetail in a later episode. During this time, the oregonlegislature also urged congress quote to deport immediately after the war,all alien, japanese and all japan knees of american citizenship, who haveindicated dual citizenship and quote the north west territorial imperative,a movement also known as the north west front and mentioned by whites ofpremises, killer, dillon roof and his manifesto started in then s as a whiteseparatist initiative seeking to establish a mono racial country, meaning a white's only homeland. The initial primary supporters of thiseffort were the late richard butler leader of the violent idaho, basedarian nations organization and robert miles, a white supremacist pseudochristian pastor from khata michigan when they were still alive. Both butlerand myles urged white americans to flock to the pacific northwest wherethey could maintain a white racial majority. Richard butler originally referred tohis vision of a white ethno state as the forty nine states and the rice ofida in one thousand nine hundred and eightysix at the aria nation's conference in hayden lake, idaho, where the theme wasnorth west territorial and parade opinions on the venture were initiallysplit among white supremacists. Some chapters of the k, k, k and manyneonazis approved of the plan to carve out ten per cent of the united statesfor a white homeland, while others, especially the southernchapters, argued that they should fight for the home they had. They believedthe south could rise again. White supremacist, harold covington, led the north west front initiative until his death in two thousand andeighteen. He joined the neonazis national socialist white people's party, previously known as the american nazi party the same year. He joined the usarmy on a nineteen seventy one. Two years later, covington wasdischarged and decided to roam the african continent. He became inspired by south africa's apartite government, an oppressive racial segregation system and forcethere until the early nines in nineteen. Seventy six covington was expelled fromrhodesia, modern days zimbabwe, after sending threatening letters to a jewishcongregation there upon his return to the united states,he advocated for his new paramilitary group, the north west front, clearlystating its intentions quote, of course, its racism. What's wrong with racism,it's the purest form of patriotism and quote it's unclear whose leading covington'sseparatist movement to day or even how...

...many people might be involved. However, it is still active with continued andgrowing support from known white supremacist and neonazis groups. Worldwide and the desire to establish a white home land in the pacificnorthwest continues to be a driving force. The racist separatis doctrines held byrichard butler robert miles and harold covington certainly didn't die withthem. They continue to inspire new generations of white supremist activityat the expense of innocent lives. We have just learned the suspect.Twenty one year old dillon roof has been caught in north carolina, believea roof walked into the historic mother, emanual aami church in charleston lastnight sat down for nearly an hour at a bible study there and then open firekilling nine people, six women and a three men, including the church'spastor, clemente pinkney, who is also a prominent state senator we want tobring an ameto june. Seventeenth, two thousand fifteen, a young neonazisnamed dill. An roof walked into the historic emmanual african methodistepiscopal, church, locally endeared as mother emmanuel in charleston southcarolina, an open fire on a bible study, grew praying inside the victims. Six women and three menwere all african american members of the church and the horrific act ofdeadly terrorism devastated the entire community, its believe the church was targeted byrufe because of its historic association with the civil rightsmovement following the murders dillon rofe'smanifesto was uncovered on line in it. He claimed to take inspirationfor the killings directly from harold cubing ton, even paying tribute to himin the title, the last rodesia in his manifesto, which roof publishedon a public website. He blames black people for america's problems andclaimed that segregation is quote a defensive measure, echoing haroldcovington's racist white homeland views covington himself later said before hisown death, that the mass murder committed by dylan roof was just aquote preview of coming attractions. Sadly, in this regard, he wasn't wrong. The crime took place here on south eastthirty. First, early sunday morning, three black men all from ethiopia weresitting in this car talking when one left ted for his apartment. Another carpulled up. Three young white men jumped out and began beating him. The long history of white supremacy andrestrictive racist laws in oregon in the pacific northwest of america isalso given rise to other violent events in recent decades. In on thousand ninehundred and eighty eight an event. I remember very well for my own youth, ethiopian, emigrant mallegeta, sarah was murdered by neo nazi skin heads insouth east portland, the twenty eight year old man had been saying his goodbyes to friends. When the group of so called white pride skin headsapproached and started shouting racial slurs and obscenities quickly, things turned violent. Sarah was brutally murdered with abaseball bat and kicks from the steel toed boots of the racist skin. Heads ina city's image is a place of peace and tolerance. As shattered the crime seemed to shock the city ofportland, but it shouldn't have racist skin heads, let alone racism ingeneral had noticeably been prevalent for years by the time of sir ras murder.

The powers that be had simply ignoredthe warnings, something that continues to this day. More recently in two thousand andseventeen, a white man named jeremy christian, boarded a full max commuter train in portland. He began screaming at two young womenand directed anti missle slurs at them, claiming that people of color werequote ruining the city to night the every eye looking into whether hatecrime charges will be filed against an alleged white supremacist accused ofstabbing two good samaritans to death on a commuter train. In portland, icelanders tried to intervene and physically moved the aggressor awayfrom the young women, but he only became more agitated. A man named talise mirdan namkeen wastrying to record the disturbance when jeremy christians swiped the phone outof his hand and plunged a knife into his neck. He also attacked two trained passengersnamed rick best and mica david col, fletcher, namkhamm and best died as a result oftheir wounds and fletcher was seriously wounded. The racist attacker was charged withtwo counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. An oregon jury found him guilty infebruary two thousand and twenty, and eventually sentenced him the two lifesentences in prison without parole over the last year. Since the outbreakof the covin nineteen pandemic, eight crimes in the state of oregon haveincreased over three hundred per cent. The asian american and pacific islanderor a api communities reported forty two per cent of all the occurrenceshighlighting a nationwide search in antiates and attacks. A recent two thousand and twenty onesurvey by the salem statesman journal also found that almost forty per centof oregon residents believe that white people are unfairly discriminatedagainst and that america get. This should do more to preserve its whiteeuropean heritage. Despite the fact that oregon is alreadyan overwhelming eighty six percent white to day and only two point, twopercent black. The survey also showed that abouteleven per cent of oregonians support outright white nationalist principles,an anti establishment militia groups, it doesn't sound much like peace andlove coming from a state that is mostly known for its hippi culture. So what's the moral of this wannabesecessionist story? It's not that there are groups ofradical whites supremacist that would rather slice off whole sections of thecountry for arian, safe spaces. Then cohabitation non white people, ofcourse, not that's nothing new instead, where americans may often go wrong here,is believing that these are fringe movements that don't have anyconnection to their own daily lives. That is a huge mistake. We can point to movements likenorthwest territorial imperative and call them fringe all right, whitenationalist, extremist movements even still the reality. Is there ourelements baked into our larger systems that breed an equity right in our ownbackyards, and there are still, unfortunately, plenty of us would rather turn a blind eye to it than face the truth about ourpast and present. Just ask yourself how millions ofgermans were able to ignore the rise of adolf, hitler's diabolical right. Thenlook around and ask yourself if we...

...might be experiencing something similarright now. Many americans live in the suburbs, atrend which can be traced back to the end of world war, two with somethingcalled leaved towns. Five years ago this was a vast checker board of potatobombs on new york long island to day a community of sixty thousand personsliving in fifteen thousand homes, a built by one firm. This is a i one ofthe most remarkable housing developers. Evocant loved towns were named for the originalconstruction company that developed them, love it and sons. They built eight suburban housingcomplexes in pennsylvania, new york, new jersey, maryland virginia and portorico. In the early nineteen s and s, these were modern communities at thetime, chock full of amenities like bowling alleys, grocery stores andaffordable, two bedroom homes perfect for gis returning from war andfor their growing families. This type of suburban housingdevelopment became hugely popular and community subdivisions. Much likeleaved towns still dominate the american real estate sounds sort of idylic right. What's not so well known about leavetowns is that their creator, william j levet, refused to sell his homes topeople of color per juli laski from the new york timesquote early leveed town leases barred home owners from renting or selling tothose who weren't caucasians, although they stipulated that people of colorcould work as domestics. Rather than calling this out as aunited states constitutional violation, the federal housing administrationinstead made segregation a requirement for housing developers to qualify forsubsidies through the program effectively. Leve towns were legalgovernment sanction whites only communities and they want the only ones of theirkind, often called racial covenants. Racistlanguage codified in official real estate documents was rampant across thecountry until he n s this language, such as the owner being prohibited fromreselling, the property to a black family, was often required by banks inorder to be approved for alone. The argument at the time was thatfamilies of color moving into white neighborhoods would allegedly lowerproperty values and increase crime rates. Some of that racist language is stillpresent in home and real estate covenant documents to day university of washington. Researchers, for example, recently uncovered racial covenant, language affecting abouttwenty thousand properties in washington states o king county, whichincludes the city of seattle. We typically like to think of the jimcrow era, a separate drinking fountains and segregated buses in the south, butthe effects of white separatism within the housing market throughout theunited states can still be felt to day. This is the origin story of many modernamerican suburbs and communities, and it was followed up with mortgagediscrimination, predatory lending practices and red line that stillstubbornly persists to this day, despite the illegality and inhumanityof it. All we'll go much more in depth into thingslike racist lending practices and red lining. In a later episode, still, even when communities of colordid manage to carve out prosperous neighborhoods for themselves, usinfrastructure, of course, american racists, at a habit of running rightthrough the...

...per the department of transportation, the federal aid highway act of a nineteen. Fifty seven this placed overfour hundred and seventy five thousand households and one million people fromone thousand nine hundred fifty seven nineteen. Seventy seven most of these households, displaced byour national interstate system, belong to communities of color. Just one example of many is the neworleans neighborhood of treme, the historically black on clay founded inseventeen. Eighty three tremain was one of the few places innew orleans, where free people of color could buy property prior to the civilwar, and it became a vibrant cultural center for the black community. Evenduring the jim crow er, then the national highways came. The clay born expressway cleaved, theneighborhood into fragments leading to business closures and displacedresidents. Now, eighty years later, president joebiden is attempting to write some of these wrongs and has proposed removingthe clay born. Expressway current residents of treme have majorconcerns. However, to day in cities across america, realestate developers are going into lower income, neighborhoods and redevelopingthem a process known as gentrification. It drives property values, up, attractsnew businesses and draws wealth, but it often has the effect of displacingexisting lower income residents. Residents of treme and other similarneighbourhoods worry. These efforts to remove expressways and reroute highwayscould lead to further displacement and gentrification of in their communities. While one could argue that this isprogress, why must it always come at the expense of the port andpredominantly people of color? Isn't there a better, more equitableway to achieve progress? Writer douglas perry put all of thisinto context in his june two thousand and twenty piece for the oregonian hesaid. Progressive white americans might reject racism and insist, there's noplace for it in today's society, but that doesn't mean they want to give upthe advantages. It's provided them institutionalized racism createdintergenerational wealth for some and not others. It shaped the geography ofthe cities and towns. We traverse every day and quote, and it's true innergenerational wealth spell security and prosperity for the future. Much of that comes from owning land, property and tangible wealth accumulated from one generation to thenext. If parents or grandparents weresystematically excluded from building that wealth because of the color oftheir skin until recently, it almost certainly impacts the financialsecurity of current and future generations. Think about that. So here we are to day there's a lot of controversy right nowover attempts to critically examine america's history, especially itsracist history, and how it still impacts us as a nation places like idaho and tennessee, haveeven passed laws banning the teaching of a legal and academic concept calledcritical race theory in public schools and universities. Basically, this ensure students andteachers will be allowed fewer opportunities for thoughtful andinformed conversations about how racism may have impacted our development as anation and a united people, even when some of these very people arestill dealing with the generational after shocks caused by practices likesegregation and discrimination. That means no discussions about racerelations, at least not truthful, and...
